Micromanagement from clients can be overwhelming, frustrating, and time consuming. On one hand, we understand why a client would micromanage. They want their project taken seriously, done right, and they may have been taken advantage of in an experience with another contractor. On the other hand, it takes time away from your work.
For this article, we want to share with ways to handle clients who want to micromanage your work:
- Write in your contract with the client how and when you will communicate with them. You can then communicate more often if you are able to at your own discretion, but the contract will remind clients of what they agreed to.
- Let them know, in a nice way, the more time you talk to them, the less time you are working on their project.
- If a client shows up at a job site, remind them their presence is a liability and a safety hazard.
- Suggest they leave you messages and wait to hear back from you.
- If you can tell right away a client will be intense and micromanage everything you do, you may want to decline the job.
- Respectfully remind the client that this is your expertise and specialty and therefore they hired you for a reason.
- Come up with a schedule that you both agree to when it comes to communication.
- Always be polite, respectful and assertive.
Some clients will never be easy to deal with, but you must remind yourself it’s because they want their project to come out well. You have to work on finding the right balance of what type of communication they’re looking for and remember to not overextend yourself.
