Certified contractors with active licenses need to complete 14 hours of board-approved continuing education every 2 years by August 31st in even numbered years. A renewal fee must be paid by this date as well. Let’s look at these two separately.
Continuing Education:
- Active contractors who have held their license for more than two years as of 8/31/14 need to do 14 hours of continuing education.
- If a contractor will have been actively licensed for one full year and one partial year at the 8/31/14 renewal date, they are responsible for 7 CEUs at that time.
- If a contractor has only been actively licensed for a partial year at the 8/31/14 renewal date, they do not have any continuing education that needs to be completed.
- This rule does not apply to those being grandfathered into their certified license.
In regards to how to take continuing education, the choices really depends on personal preference. Some people would prefer to take the classes intermittently, in their own homes or offices. A quick google search can help you to find many online providers. Otherwise, if you would prefer taking a weekend or a couple of days during the week and attending a course, there are some options for you to consider. Renewal Fee:
As far as the renewal fee, the state has instituted a Fee Holiday! The CILB and DBPR has approved a $100 fee holiday for the 2014 and 2015 renewal cycles for certified and registered contractors who are renewing their licenses. During the fee holiday,
- Certified and registered contractors renewing an active license will have their fees reduced by $100.00.
- Certified and registered contractors renewing their inactive licenses will have their $50.00 inactive renewal fee waived in its entirety. ($5 unlicensed activity fee still applies)
