In May of 2012 for construction candidates and 2013 for electrical license holders, Governor Rick Scott approved House Bills which allows Registered Contractors in the State of Florida to “grandfather” their Registered Contractor’s license into a State Certified license. The deadline for contractors to request this is fast approaching and it is not certain yet indicated if or when this opportunity will occur again.
No matter what, the Grandfathering applicants must meet certain requirements we have listed below:
- Currently hold a valid state-registered license in one of the major contractor categories. A state registration is only valid if the county competency card is active and in good standing.
- Have passed a written exam that the board finds to be substantially similar to the state certified exam. Some examples of the accepted exams are: Block and Associates, National Assessment Institute, NAI/Block, Experior Assessments, Professional Testing, Inc., and Assessment Systems, Inc.
- Have held the state-registered license for at least 5 years in an active
- Have not had your license revoked at any time, had your license suspended in the last five years, or have been assessed a fine in excess of $500 within the last five years.
- Be in compliance with insurance and financial responsibility requirements.
- Pay the application fee of $205 for Electrical or $309 for Construction applications.
The grandfathering applications were assigned a deadline of November 1st, 2015. Any applications postmarked after this date will not be accepted. Therefore, please be sure to review the requirements listed above to determine if you are eligible for this fantastic opportunity, which will allow you to grow your career opportunities throughout the state with just the one license.
